On April 7, 1805, they headed west again and pushed into what is now Montana. Here they saw big horn sheep, geese, swans, cranes, and bald eagles. Roasted beaver tails were a special treat for the hungry men, and buffalo meat soon became a staple of their diet. Each man consumed 9 pounds of buffalo a day.
